The short version

  • Ads are live in ChatGPT in India for adults on the Free and Go plans. Self-serve buying opened on 31 August 2026. The floor is ₹725 a day, about ₹21,750 a month.
  • The ad sits below the answer, labelled. It does not change the answer. Paying does not get you recommended.
  • At the floor, a first order pays for its click only if a click costs ₹5 to ₹24. Nobody has reported an Indian click price. OpenAI's US guidance is $3 to $5.
  • So the floor buys price discovery, not sales. Thirty days as research, judged on click price and add-to-cart rate, never on orders.
  • Pass four gates first. Do the free work first. The fifteen-minute version carries every source.

Where the ad sits

Two doors. Paying at one does not open the other.

Where the ad sits, and where it does not

Two doors: a ChatGPT answer with product results chosen by ChatGPT, and a separate labelled sponsored card below it. Paying at one door does not open the other.

Product results are "selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads" (OpenAI Help, updated late Aug 2026). The tawa example is illustrative.

Two systems. The answer and its product results are chosen by ChatGPT and are "not ads" in OpenAI's own words. The sponsored card sits below, labelled. Money opens the second door only. Your product pages, prices and crawler access open the first.

What the floor buys

What ₹725 a day actually buys in a month.

₹21,750 a month · four assumed click prices · no Indian click price has been published

Bar chart: at ₹21,750 a month, ₹10 a click buys 2,175 clicks and 22 to 44 orders; ₹50 buys 435 clicks and 4 to 9 orders; ₹150 buys 145 clicks and 1 to 3 orders; ₹380 buys 57 clicks and about 1 order.

Orders assume a 1% to 2% site conversion rate. The ₹10 row uses the Meta India median click price (Superads, thousands of accounts, all verticals). OpenAI's US bid guidance is $3 to $5 a click (PPC Land, 5 May 2026).

The one number to compute first: your break-even click price.

What a first order can pay for a customer, divided by your site's conversion rate

Break-even click price: a ₹1,500 order at 35% contribution can pay ₹525, so the click must cost under ₹5 to ₹10; a ₹3,000 order at 40% can pay ₹1,200, under ₹12 to ₹24; OpenAI's US guidance is $3 to $5 a click, about ₹285 to ₹475.

Break-even click price = contribution per first order × site conversion rate (1% to 2% assumed). At the floor this is price discovery, not a sales channel.

Read the two together. Unless India clears clicks near Meta's ₹10, the floor cannot pay for itself on first orders. Repeat purchase changes the answer only if your repeat rate is measured, not hoped.

The only published small-advertiser tests found little: one got 58 clicks and zero leads, another a 1.30% click-through and "very few sign-ups". ChatGPT traffic is small and behaves well, converting 31% better than non-branded search at a lower order value, and six visits in ten land on the homepage. Indian intent is loud, with 64% of consumers using GenAI somewhere in the purchase journey, but Bain and Flipkart say end-to-end shopping in a chat "is rarely used" today.

The four gates

Pass all four gates before you open ads.openai.com.

Any one failing means wait

The four gates before opening ads.openai.com: category, claims, page, money.
Text version of this figure
01CategoryHealth, financial and legal ads barred outside the US. Supplements with unsupported claims banned.
02ClaimsASCI 2025-26: 9,611 violative ads, 98% needed modification. An assistant repeats an over-claim in your name.
03PageProduct page, not homepage. Crawlers OAI-SearchBot and OAI-AdsBot allowed. UTMs and pixel before day one.
04MoneyAbout ₹22,000 a month you can write off for two months. Your own order table. Nothing moved from Meta or Google.

Health, financial and legal ads are barred outside the US by OpenAI's own policy, and supplements with unsupported claims are banned everywhere. ASCI modified 96% of the nutraceutical ads it examined last year. An assistant that reads an over-claimed page repeats the claim in your name.

Test now, organic first, or wait

Who should test in September, and who should wait.

By claims risk and ticket size, not by category glamour

Test the floor now: kitchen and cookware, electronics and audio, gifting and stationery, baby gear, fitness equipment. Organic first: skincare, hair care, jewellery and silver, ethnic wear, home decor. Wait: supplements, ayurveda and wellness, low-ticket packaged food.

Test the floor now
  • Kitchen and cookware

Spec-led questions, low claims risk. The question shape is native to a chat.

Organic first, paid later
  • Skincare
  • Hair care
  • Jewellery and silver
  • Ethnic wear
  • Home decor

High visibility in AI answers, but claims or fit decide the money. Fix the pages before buying traffic to them.

Wait
  • Supplements
  • Ayurveda and wellness
  • Low-ticket packaged food

Policy bars most of it, ASCI modifies the rest, and a ₹300 order cannot buy a ₹150 click.

Category visibility is a US proxy (Adobe via Digital Commerce 360, 19 Aug 2026); compliance load is Indian (ASCI, May 2026).

The free work that comes first

  1. Unblock the crawlers. A site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot is not shown in ChatGPT answers. One site in five blocks an AI crawler by accident.
  2. Make the product page answer the unbranded question. Shopping results fire on 12.1% of open-ended prompts and 3.1% of brand-name prompts. "Best X under ₹Y for Z" with real specs and prices is the page that gets cited.
  3. Check your Google eligibility. Ads inside Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode already serve in India from the Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns you run. Put the catalogue in Merchant Center: Google's AI shopping is live in India in English and Hindi, while OpenAI's merchant feed still targets the US.
  4. Measure the free traffic first. GA4 has had an "AI Assistant" channel since May 2026.
  5. Skip llms.txt. 97% of them get no traffic. Fix titles and plain-English URLs instead.

The thirty-day plan

What I would do with ₹50,000 and thirty days.

For a brand that passes all four gates

₹50,000 split into ₹21,750 for the ₹725 floor over 30 days, up to ₹5,000 for pixel and page fixes, and a ₹23,250 reserve untouched until day 30; Day 0 pass the gates, Days 1 to 30 run one campaign, Day 30 decide; kill rules at day 14 and day 30.
Text version of this figure

The ₹725 floor for 30 daysPixel and page fixes, up toReserve, untouched until day 30

Day 0Pass the four gates. One working day.
Days 1 to 30One campaign, two ad groups, six to eight distinct ads, product pages as destinations. The five free moves in parallel.
Day 30Order table, click price and add-to-cart rate beside your Meta numbers. Pass: the reserve funds month two. Fail: it stays in the bank.
Kill rules, written down before day one. Day 14: stop if the click price is over ten times break-even and add-to-cart is below the site average. Day 30: stop if cost per add-to-cart is worse than Meta's.

If your site converts under 1% today

Skip all of this and fix that first. I do not prescribe growth to a business that is still leaking. If you want a second pair of eyes on your numbers before you decide, the Outside Look is free, and the 30-Day Leak Map is the study that prices the leak before you scale any spend. The fifteen-minute version carries every source and the full measurement design.

Questions people ask

Are ChatGPT ads available in India?

Yes. Ads have shown to adults on the Free and Go plans since late August 2026, and self-serve buying opened in India on 31 August 2026 according to OpenAI's own announcement.

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads in India?

₹725 a day per campaign, about ₹21,750 a month. Daily budgets are seven-day averages, so a single day can bill up to twice the daily amount.

Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?

No. OpenAI states that advertising does not influence the answers, and that product results inside answers are selected independently and are not ads.

Should ChatGPT ads replace my Google or Meta budget?

No. At the floor the channel is a thirty-day price-discovery test, funded from slack, judged on click price and add-to-cart rate. Move budget only after your own numbers show a cost per order that beats what you already pay.
